Nice to be nice
The initial idea for #SideStage15 came from us believing that event management students and people looking to get into events needed a conference / event where they could learn more about the industry and hopefully gain some insights on how to get into it.
We get approached all the time to help people and we do what we can. We have mailing lists, we do blog posts, we meet with people to advise them and we offer work where we can. It’s nice to be nice.
Doing SideStage seemed like a fairly logical next step.
Plus, we’ve all been there. We’ve all had to find our own way into the event industry and we think SideStage is just the type of event we’d have benefited from back then.
We’re not against making money, not by a long shot. In fact, we’re all for it. If we weren’t making money then we wouldn’t be able to put on #SideStage15 for free at all.
We’re not sure how popular SideStage will be. We’ve not run an event like this before and we’re not sure how good we’re going to be at it. We didn’t think it’d be fair to charge you guys money for it.
We’re also not sure how many of you will be into it. We THINK it’ll be popular but we don’t know for sure. So, without really knowing how many of you will be there, we didn’t want to go bullsh*tting sponsors etc. to try get them to pay to be involved.
We’ve NO idea how this event will go and we have NO idea if there will be more in the future or not.
We’re not silly. We’re not going to rule out charging people to come to future versions of this and we’re not going to rule out bringing sponsors / partners on board if they make sense.
Right now, we’re focusing on this year’s event and making it right.
